yom kippur is the most important date in the jewish calendar.it is a holiday,and many jews who do not observe any other jewish custom will still observe this one. they refrain from work.fast and attend schul,sorry synagogue. the holiday occurs on the tenth day of Tishri. Rosh Hashanah being New Year and the first of the month.the name Yom Kippur means Day of Atonement,and that is what it is.a day set aside to afflict the soul.to atone for sins committed during the past year. *
